Each morning come rain or shine

I take a walk of about a mile and a half.  It helps me plan and prepare for the day, the exercise does me good, I feel better after it, and yet sometimes there is a search for a reason not to do it, especially if it is a cold, dark, wet and windy morning, or if I have a really busy day in front of me.

But I found the solution to this, and it was quite simple. I merely break the walk down into chunks in my mind. For example, on those reluctant mornings, I don’t think about the total journey, I think about getting to the pedestrian crossing just 300 yards away from my home.  I know by the time I reach that pedestrian crossing I will be warm, in my stride and the welcome effects of nature’s own feel-good chemicals will be pumping through me.

This approach of breaking tasks down

and new learning into chunks works well for me, and for others I work with too. However we have to make sure our motivation is not sabotaged by impatience. Motivation is about making change, achieving different things in our life, but if we don’t structure our motivation, very soon our desire for change will ebb away, and then we can fall into regret, guilt, despondency and other negative thoughts, and simply return back to the old thought patterns of ‘I can’t change and this is my lot’. 

I have to say, those thoughts are flawed. It doesn’t have to be like that. Because each and every one of us can make changes to our lives: we decide what we want to achieve, we decide how much effort we are going to put into making changes happen, and how much effort we put into building our motivation too. We simply cannot blame others, or circumstances for how things are, because we know deep down, if we want them enough - really, really enough - we can find a way of achieving them.

First we have to have a clear goal; we then have to structure our journey to be able to achieve that goal. Some steps in that journey may be bigger than others, and if they are, we can break them down further into even smaller steps.

So whether you want to stop smoking,

lose weight, make changes in your life or in a relationship or changes at work, it all starts by knowing clearly what your goal is. Make sure your goals are realistic, and that you have given them adequate time to be achieved. By doing this at the outset, it will prevent impatience setting in, and the possible abandoning of your attempts to change.

Once you master the art of motivation you can be sure your life will become enriched, more exciting, more fulfilling, and procrastination will be a thing of the past. In addition you will feel you have more control in your life, and anxieties, stress and fears will often subside.
