What 28 Years Has Taught Me About Helping People Change

What 28 Years Has Taught Me About Helping People Change

When I first began my journey of creating therapeutic audio programs in 1991, releasing the IBS Audio Program 100 in 1998, I initially thought helping people change was mainly about techniques.

Finding the right words, using the right approach, developing effective hypnosis sessions.

Those things certainly matter, but over the years of working with thousands of people, I discovered something far more important.

Real, lasting change rarely happens because someone finds the perfect technique.

It happens because they find the right moment, the right support and, perhaps most importantly, the belief that change really is possible.

Change Is Rarely Instant

We live in a world that celebrates overnight success, quick fixes, seven-day transformations, and 'miracle' solutions.

Yet the people I've seen make the most meaningful and lasting changes have almost always taken a different path. They've been patient with themselves, which wasn't always easy. They've accepted that progress isn't always a straight line.

Some days feel like great leaps forward, while others feel like standing still.  Occasionally, it can even feel as though you're moving backwards. But that doesn't mean you're failing; it often means you're learning.

The Mind Learns Through Repetition

Whether someone is managing anxiety, living with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, coping with stress, rebuilding confidence or adjusting to persistent pain, lasting improvement usually comes from gentle repetition rather than dramatic breakthroughs. There are times, of course, when the mind learns immediately, but that is for another time.

The mind largely learns by becoming familiar with calmer thoughts, with safer feelings, with new habits.

This is one of the reasons our audio programs are structured rather than being isolated recordings. Each session builds upon the last, allowing new ways of thinking to develop naturally over time.

Small changes, repeated consistently, often become the biggest changes of all.

Compassion Creates Better Results Than Criticism

One lesson has surprised me more than any other.

People are often far kinder to everyone else than they are to themselves. I've met individuals who would encourage a friend with warmth and patience, yet speak to themselves with relentless criticism.

Real progress usually begins when that inner conversation changes. When people stop demanding perfection and begin allowing themselves to be human.

Self-compassion isn't giving up; it's creating the conditions in which lasting change becomes possible.

There Is No "Typical" Person

Over the years I've worked with people from many different backgrounds and walks of life.

No two stories have ever been identical; the symptoms may appear similar, the circumstances may sound familiar, but every person's journey is uniquely their own.

Good therapeutic support should leave room for each individual to move at their own pace and discover what works for them.

Hope Is More Powerful Than We Realise

One of the greatest privileges of my work has been hearing from people months or even years after they first began listening.

Many describe something quite unexpected: not a dramatic overnight transformation; instead, they talk about gradually noticing that life had become easier, that difficult days didn't feel quite so overwhelming.

That they were coping better. Sleeping more peacefully. Feeling calmer.

Sometimes the biggest changes are only recognised when we look back.

The Journey Continues

Twenty-eight years have taught me that there is always more to learn; every person brings a new story.

Every conversation offers another opportunity to understand the remarkable resilience of the human mind; if there's one lesson I hope readers take from this article, it's this:

You do not have to become a completely different person to improve your life; often, lasting change begins with one small decision, one gentle step, one quiet moment of believing that tomorrow really can feel different from today.

If our work has helped you make even one of those small steps over the past 28 years, then I consider it a privilege to have been part of your journey.

Thank you for allowing Healthy Audio Hypnosis to walk alongside you.
