Why Your Wellbeing Matters When You Are Caring for Someone Else
When everyone else's needs come first
Wellbeing for family carers is vital, but often forgotten. There is something that happens quite easily when you become a carer. Your attention moves towards the other person.
What do they need? What needs doing? What appointment is coming up? What needs collecting? What needs organising? What might happen tomorrow? And I'm sure there are many more 'Whats'.
Gradually, almost without noticing, your own needs can move further down the list.
Perhaps you tell yourself you'll get around to yourself later, or when things settle down. When the next appointment is over, and when you've caught up or when life becomes easier.
But caring doesn't always give you that convenient moment.
Your wellbeing isn't an optional extra
Looking after your own wellbeing isn't about putting yourself before the person you care for.
It's about recognising that you are a person within this situation too.
Your emotional health matters. Your relationships matter. Your interests matter. Your need for rest matters. Your need to be listened to matters.
Carers UK specifically highlights the importance of carers looking after their own needs, while also recognising how easily exhaustion and burnout can develop when everything is focused on the person being cared for.*
Why can self-care feel so difficult?
The phrase self-care can sometimes make things sound deceptively simple.
Have a bath. Go for a walk. Take some time for yourself. Relax.
But what if you can't simply walk away?
- What if someone depends on you?
- What if you feel guilty leaving them?
- What if there is always something that needs doing?
- For many family carers, the difficulty isn't knowing that wellbeing matters.
It's finding a realistic way to give it some attention.
You don't have to make dramatic changes
Looking after yourself doesn't necessarily mean taking a week away or completely changing your routine.
Sometimes it can begin with something much smaller, a cup of tea that you actually sit down to drink, 10 minutes with a book, a conversation with someone who understands.
Listening to something calming, sitting quietly without having to solve anything. A few minutes in which you aren't organising, planning or responding.
These moments don't solve everything.
But they can be moments in which you exist as yourself rather than only as the person who cares for someone else.
Put yourself somewhere on the list
You don't have to move yourself to the top. Perhaps just don't leave yourself off the list altogether.
Ask yourself:
What do I need today?
The answer may be sleep, it may be company, it may be quiet, it may be help or it may simply be permission to acknowledge that you're finding things difficult.
There is no wrong answer.

Wellbeing for Family Carers
Wellbeing isn't about being positive all the time
Sometimes carers are encouraged to stay positive.
But real wellbeing isn't about pretending that everything is fine.
- You can have a difficult day.
- You can feel angry.
- You can feel sad.
- You can feel exhausted.
- You can love someone enormously and still need time away from the situation.
- Wellbeing begins with honesty.
So, asking the question: How am I actually doing? Is a great place to start.
A little time that belongs to you. This is one of the ideas behind the More Than A Carer Programme.
The second recording, Personal Wellbeing Matters, offers a quiet opportunity to turn some attention back towards yourself.
Not because your caring responsibilities don't matter, of course they do, but because you matter within them.
You don't have to earn the right to have some time for yourself. You are allowed to need it.
Because you are more than a carer.
