Why Don't I Believe in Myself?

Questions We Ask Ourselves

Gentle reflections exploring the thoughts, feelings and questions many people carry quietly within themselves. These articles are written to offer understanding, hope and practical encouragement, reminding us that we are never alone in the questions we ask ourselves.

Why Don't I Believe in Myself?

A few years ago, on one of our moorland walks, I paused beside a dry-stone wall that overlooked a wide valley. The view stretched for miles, yet what caught my attention wasn't the landscape.

It was a small oak sapling growing from what seemed to be the tiniest crack between the stones. I remember wondering how something so small had found enough room to grow.

It wasn't in the ideal place. It wasn't surrounded by rich soil. It didn't have very much working in its favour. Yet there it was, quietly reaching towards the light.

I've thought about that little tree many times since, not because it was remarkable in itself, but because it reminded me of some of the many people I've worked with over the years.

A young oak sapling growing from a crack in an old dry-stone wall, symbolising hope, resilience, confidence and believing in yourself.

Over my forty years in practice, I've met so many thoughtful, capable individuals who struggled to see what was obvious to everyone around them in themselves.

They doubted their abilities, questioned their decisions, dismissed their successes and accepted compliments with embarrassment.

And if something went well, they often explained it away as luck rather than recognising the qualities they had brought to the situation.

Perhaps you've known that feeling yourself, perhaps you've looked at someone else and thought,

"I wish I had their confidence."

The interesting thing is that we often notice confidence in other people far more readily than in ourselves.

I've sat with people who believed they had very little to offer, while quietly hearing stories that spoke of courage, resilience, kindness and determination.

They simply couldn't see it, not because it wasn't there, but because they'd become so accustomed to looking for their faults that they overlooked their strengths.

I sometimes wonder how many of us learned to notice what was wrong before we ever learned to appreciate what was right.

Life has a curious way of reinforcing that habit, while mistakes stay with us.

Successes quickly become yesterday's news.

We replay our awkward moments far more often than we revisit the times we made someone smile or helped them through a difficult day.

Yet those moments are part of our story too; perhaps believing in ourselves doesn't begin with becoming a different person, maybe it begins with telling ourselves a more complete story.

One that includes not only the things we wish we'd done differently, but also the quiet acts of kindness, perseverance and courage that have shaped who we are.

The little oak between the cracks in the wall wasn't comparing itself to the mature trees across the valley; it was simply growing where the acorn had ended up.

Our lives were never meant to be copies of someone else's. We each have different experiences, different gifts and different journeys.

Comparison has a way of making us feel smaller. While gratitude for who we are has a way of helping us grow.

At Healthy Audio Hypnosis, the Confidence & Self-Esteem Support Program was created to help people rediscover something they often believed had been lost.

Not confidence that depends on perfection or constant success, but a quieter confidence that grows from recognising your own worth and learning to trust yourself a little more with each passing day.

Real confidence isn't about believing you can do everything. It's about believing that whatever tomorrow brings, you'll find a way through it. Like the acorn, we all have great potential.

Before You Go...

As you go about your day, I'd like you to remember that little oak tree. It wasn't waiting until everything was perfect before it began to grow. It simply reached towards the light with what it had.

Perhaps believing in yourself begins in much the same way. Not by waiting until you feel ready. But by quietly taking the next step, exactly as you are.
