More Than A Carer: A Programme Created for the Person Behind the Caring

Because the person doing the caring matters too

Over the past week, our More Than A Carer blog posts have explored some of the experiences that can become part of life when you are caring for someone you love.

We have talked about compassion fatigue and what happens when caring becomes emotionally exhausting.

We have considered personal wellbeing, and how easily your own needs can slip down the list.

We have explored what it can mean to lose sight of yourself when the caring role gradually occupies more and more of your life.

We have looked at why asking for and accepting support can sometimes feel surprisingly difficult.

And finally, we considered the importance of finding small moments of peace, even when the circumstances around you cannot easily be changed.

These are different subjects.

But underneath all of them is something very simple:

The person doing the caring matters too.

That is where More Than A Carer began.

When caring becomes a way of life

Becoming a family carer isn't always a clearly defined event. Sometimes it happens gradually. You help a little more, then a little more again.

You attend an appointment, take on another responsibility. Start keeping track of medication, change your routines and put your own plans on hold.

And eventually, caring can become such a significant part of everyday life that it can be difficult to remember what life looked like before it.

There can be love and meaning in caring. There can also be tiredness, frustration, uncertainty and loneliness.

Often, there is no simple emotion, you can feel several things at once.

And perhaps that's one of the things carers need most: a space where all of those feelings can be understood.

More Than A Carer was created with this in mind

There are many excellent resources available to help people understand caring.

There is information about benefits.

  • Practical advice.
  • Medical information.
  • Guidance about accessing services.
  • Information about particular conditions and disabilities.

All of these can be valuable.

But there is another question.

What about the emotional experience of the person doing the caring?

  • What happens when you're tired of being strong?
  • What happens when you realise that your own wellbeing has been pushed aside?
  • What happens when you can't remember the last time you did something simply because you wanted to?
  • What happens when you need somebody to understand how you feel rather than tell you what you should do?

More Than A Carer was created to explore these quieter questions.

Four recordings. Four different perspectives.

The programme contains four therapeutic audio recordings, each looking at a different aspect of the caring experience. (Plus a bonus recording)

1 Understanding Compassion Fatigue

Sometimes exhaustion isn't simply physical.

Continually giving emotional energy to another person can leave you feeling drained in ways that are difficult to explain.

This recording offers an opportunity to recognise and reflect on that experience without judgement.

2 Personal Wellbeing Matters

Your own wellbeing can become very easy to overlook.

This recording gently turns the focus towards you and the importance of giving your needs some space.

Not of course because the person you care for matters less, but because you matter too.

3 Keeping Hold of Who You Are

Being a carer is something you do, it isn't necessarily the whole of who you are.

This recording considers the importance of maintaining a sense of yourself beyond the caring role,  your interests, relationships, memories and the things that make you you.

4 Giving Yourself Permission to Receive Support

Carers are often exceptionally good at giving, but receiving can be much harder.

This recording explores the possibility that accepting help isn't a weakness, and that you don't have to carry everything alone.

And then there is a quieter place to pause

Alongside the four main recordings is the bonus recording:

Finding Moments of Peace Within the Journey

This recording is gently reflective:

  • There is less emphasis on exploring an issue and more opportunity simply to pause.
  • It can be returned to whenever you feel you would benefit from a little quiet time.
  • Because sometimes you don't need another answer.
  • You don't need another thing to think about.

You simply need a few moments when nothing is being asked of you.

It isn't a course you have to complete

One of the things we felt was important when developing More Than A Carer was not to create another programme that carers had to keep up with.

  • Caring can already come with enough responsibilities.
  • So there are no tests.
  • No homework.
  • No targets.
  • No expectation that you will listen every day.
  • No demand
  • No insistance
  • No rigid listening required

We do suggest listening to the four main recordings in order initially if possible, but after that you can return to whichever recording feels relevant.

This is not another responsibility.

It is an opportunity, to give yourself time for you. Because everyone, needs some 'me time'

Therapeutic audio offers something different

There is something about listening that can allow you to step away from the constant activity of caring for a little while.

  • You don't have to read instructions.
  • You don't have to concentrate on completing an exercise.
  • You can simply find somewhere comfortable, put on your headphones if you wish, and listen.
  • The recordings combine therapeutic guidance, reflection and relaxation.
  • They are designed to be accessible and gentle.
  • You don't need previous experience of meditation, hypnosis or relaxation techniques.

You simply need a few moments in which you can listen.

You don't have to be struggling to benefit either!

More Than A Carer isn't only for the moments when everything feels overwhelming.

You might be coping reasonably well and simply recognise that you need some time for yourself.

You might want to understand more about your own experience of caring.

You might be looking for something you can return to when difficult days arise.

Or perhaps someone has given you the programme because they recognise how much you do.

There is no particular point at which you are supposed to need support.

You are allowed to look after your wellbeing before you reach breaking point.

A message from the whole programme

If there is one idea running through all five recordings, it is this:

You are more than a carer.

You are still the person you were before the caring role became such an important part of your life.

  • You still have your own needs.
  • Your own feelings.
  • Your own identity.
  • Your own hopes.
  • And your own need to sometimes stop and breathe.

Caring for another person does not make those things less important.

Perhaps this is the time to think about you

If you've followed this series of articles, perhaps you've recognised something of your own experience in them.

  • Maybe you've recognised the exhaustion.
  • Maybe the difficulty of making time for yourself.
  • Maybe the feeling that the person you once were has become harder to find.
  • Maybe you've realised that accepting support isn't failure.
  • Or perhaps you simply need somewhere quiet to stop for a few minutes.

That is what More Than A Carer was created to provide.

  • Not answers to every difficulty.
  • Not a promise that caring will suddenly become easy.
  • And not another list of things you need to accomplish.

Just a little time, understanding and therapeutic support for the person behind the caring.

A gentle next step

You can explore More Than A Carer in your own time.

The programme is available as a downloadable audio programme, and a streamed version is also available for those who prefer to listen online and do away with downloads and synching.

Overview

There are four therapeutic recordings and one bonus recording, each created around a different aspect of the emotional experience of being a family carer.

You don't have to decide that you need the whole programme.

  • Perhaps simply take a look.
  • Read about the recordings.
  • See whether something speaks to you.
  • And if it does, perhaps give yourself permission to listen.

Because you are more than a carer.

You matter too.

Before You Go

If you are caring for someone you love, there may be many people and organisations concerned with the wellbeing of the person you care for.

Don't forget that your wellbeing belongs in that picture too.

You don't have to wait until you're completely exhausted before you give yourself some attention.

  • Sometimes looking after yourself begins with something very small.
  • A pause.
  • A breath.
  • A little understanding.
  • A few minutes that belong to you.

You deserve those moments.
