MORE THAN A CARER Audio Program (Streamed Version)
Therapeutic Audio Support for Family Carers
A little space for the person behind the caring
When you spend much of your time thinking about someone else, it can be surprisingly easy to lose sight of yourself.
Your day may revolve around appointments, medication, routines, practical responsibilities and the needs of the person you care for.
But beneath the caring role is a person with their own thoughts, feelings, relationships, interests and hopes.
That person matters too.
More Than A Carer is a therapeutic audio program created to give family caregivers an opportunity to pause, reflect and spend a little time focusing on their own emotional wellbeing.
And with the streamed version, you can listen online whenever you need a little space.
A Different Kind of Support for Family Carers
There is plenty of practical information available to help people understand the caring role.
More Than A Carer takes a different approach.
- It isn't a course about how to become a better carer.
- It doesn't tell you what you should be doing.
- And it isn't medical advice.
Instead, the recordings turn the attention towards your experience of caring.
Through therapeutic guidance, reflection and relaxation, the program provides an opportunity to step away from the demands of everyday caring for a while.
- You don't need to solve anything.
- You don't need to achieve anything.
- You simply need to give yourself some time to listen.
Listen Online, When You Need It
The streamed version gives you immediate access to the More Than A Carer recordings without needing to download and store the audio files on your device. * (See Note)
You can listen from a computer, tablet or compatible mobile device whenever you have a little time for yourself.
- Perhaps you have a quiet moment during the day.
- Perhaps you listen in the evening once everything else has been taken care of.
- Or perhaps one particular recording feels especially relevant at a particular point in your caring journey.
There is no timetable you have to follow.
The program is there when you need it.
What's Included?
More Than A Carer contains four therapeutic sessions and one bonus recording.
Each explores a different aspect of the emotional experience of being a family carer.

The program includes:
Session One – Understanding Compassion Fatigue
Caring for someone over a long period can involve a continual giving of emotional and practical energy.
Sometimes you can become tired in a way that goes beyond ordinary physical tiredness.
This recording provides an opportunity to explore compassion fatigue, helping you recognise some of the signs and understand that feeling emotionally depleted does not mean you care any less.
Sometimes it simply means that you have been giving a great deal for a very long time.
Session Two – Personal Wellbeing Matters
When someone else depends on you, your own needs can easily become something you intend to deal with later.
And later can keep getting postponed.
This recording brings your attention gently back to your own wellbeing and considers why looking after yourself isn't selfish or something you have to earn.
Your wellbeing deserves a place in the picture too.
Session Three – Keeping Hold of Who You Are
The caring role can gradually become such an important part of life that other parts of your identity begin to receive less attention.
- Perhaps an interest has been put aside.
- Perhaps friendships have changed.
- Perhaps plans that once mattered have become difficult to maintain.
This recording explores the importance of remembering that being a carer is one part of your life, not the whole of who you are.
There is still a person behind the caring role.
Session Four – Giving Yourself Permission to Receive Support
Carers often become very capable of managing things for other people, but being the person who gives support doesn't necessarily make it easy to receive support.
Asking for help can bring feelings of guilt, reluctance or even the belief that you should somehow be managing on your own.
This recording gently considers another possibility:
Perhaps accepting support isn't a sign that you are failing.
Perhaps it is simply part of being human.
You don't have to carry everything by yourself.
Bonus Reinforcement Recording – Finding Moments of Peace Within The Journey
Sometimes the most useful thing you can give yourself is a few quiet moments.
This bonus recording is designed to provide just that.
It offers an opportunity to slow down, breathe and step away from the constant activity of caring for a little while.
It won't change the circumstances you are living with.
But creating a small space for yourself may help you approach what comes next with a little more calm.
Return to it whenever you feel you need a moment to pause.
There is no right or wrong way to listen
More Than A Carer isn't designed as something you have to complete perfectly.
We suggest listening to the four main sessions in order when you first begin, as they explore different aspects of the caring experience. Then the reflective bonus recording
After that, you can return to individual recordings whenever you feel they are relevant.
- You might listen to one recording several times.
- You might leave the program for a while and return to it later.
- You might find that a recording means something different to you as circumstances change.
That's perfectly okay.
This is not another task on your caring list. It is time that belongs to you.
A Quiet Approach to Carer Wellbeing
More Than A Carer has been developed from many years of therapeutic practice and experience creating digital health and wellbeing resources.
The approach is intentionally gentle.
We recognise that family caring can involve emotions that don't always fit neatly together.
- You can love someone deeply and still feel frustrated.
- You can feel strong and completely exhausted.
- You can feel connected and lonely.
- You can be hopeful while also being uncertain about what lies ahead.
- Sometimes all of those things can exist on the same day.
The recordings don't ask you to pretend otherwise.
They offer a space to consider your own experience with kindness rather than judgement.
You Don't Have to Put Yourself Last
It can sometimes feel as though looking after yourself means taking something away from the person you care for.
But your wellbeing matters independently of the caring role.
Taking a little time for yourself isn't a rejection of your responsibilities, it is simply an acknowledgement that you are a person too.
- A person who needs rest.
- A person who has feelings.
- A person who needs support.
- A person who deserves moments that aren't about appointments, medication, routines or decisions.
More Than A Carer
The name of the program reflects something we believe is important.
Caring is something you do. It is not everything you are.
There is a whole person behind the caring role.
- Your memories.
- Your relationships.
- Your interests.
- Your hopes.
- Your feelings.
- Your own need for kindness and support.
More Than A Carer was created to give that person some attention too.
