When things are difficult and on-going we often use or hear the phrase about the light at the end of the tunnel. The user of the phrase is basically saying that things are difficult, but there remains hope. Hope that the light will be the solution to the individuals’ problem. And yet if we think about that for a while, we often reflect that the tunnel is usually long, straight and dark, and imagining treading through that tunnel is like wading through treacle; that is to say it is not an easy journey.
And yet the light at the end of the tunnel, I feel, is a self-limiting thought, it is self-sabotaging, it gives little if any motivation to keep going on the difficult journey to something better.
At every moment, people around the world are going through difficult times. Those with greater brains than mine tell us to expect even more difficulties in the economy, adverse weather to name but two. But then there are also personal problems which often have an impact on finance, relationships and much more besides. And there is always an emotional cost to bear when working through problems, often there is anxiety and worry, sleepless nights and real and imaginary fears. Once the emotional price starts to be paid, that is when the phrase the light at the end of the tunnel is heard and used more often.
And yet, if we self sabotage ourselves by using that phrase, as I suspect we do, how can we expect to progress to better things, and to a more enjoyable way of life?
One of the ways you could help yourself is this: If you imagine the tunnel as long and straight, with a faint glimmer of light at the end, then in your imagination, screw it up, and throw it away! Why? Because since the time you were born you have never had a long straight journey in your life.
Life is a series of peaks and troughs, lefts and rights, twists and turns and ups and downs. If you remind yourself of this at difficult times on your journey through life, you can realise that you only have to take a few steps forward and then look left or right and that’s where the light may be. Light doesn’t travel around corners (not on earth anyway- in space with immense gravitational influences it may, but not back here on earth) so you could be very close to a solution to your problem, or there maybe someone or something around the next corner that could help you. And if not, you can look forward to taking the next few steps and looking around the next corner, and this way you maintain a feeling of taking part in your own healing or solutions.
That way, you will no longer have the sense of feeling that you just have to put up with whatever is going on and hope for the best. You can be more, and do more than that. And perhaps that’s a message we should all heed in more challenging times.
If something isn’t the way you want it to be, change it to something else, sometimes it’s scary, sometimes it’s exciting but it’s always worth the journey. So when you hear people use that light at the end of the tunnel phrase, simply remind yourself that your journey doesn’t have to be trodden in the same way.
By continuing to grow on our journey through life, we can make our journey more fulfilling, rewarding, enjoyable and fun, regardless of what other people try to tell us.

Many years ago in strange and unfamiliar territory...
I took a chance and mentioned my IBS Audio Program 100 on the ibsgroup.org bulletin board.
It was strange because up to that time (way back in 1998) I had never spoken about my work, preferring to just get on with the task of helping people to get better from the rooms of my medical centre based practice.
When I was brave enough I ventured out of my rooms having spent 8 years researching and developing my IBS Audio Program 100 for adults. Eight years of smirks and putdowns from peers and rejection from other individuals and organisations I would not have expected if from.
Many seemed to simply try to talk me out of my set aim of producing a self-help home use program for irritable bowel syndrome sufferers, an aim they said was not possible, or worthwhile!
The unfamiliar bit...
came when I joined the IBS Group.org the President, Jeff was very forward thinking and saw the value of my work to the group membership. Thank you Jeff!
I met people who understood what I had done, and why. People who applauded the journey I embarked upon. Some came along with me for the ride, as I developed other programs for insomnia, anxiety, stress and others too.
So, as I periodically do, I am offering a special 15% discount to IBSgroup.org members off any of my self-help audio programs, including of course the IBS Audio Program 100 for adults and the IBS Audio Program 60 for Children.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS
is a common digestive disorder which affects up to 1 in 5 of the population at some time in their lives. It is no respecter of age, gender or background and there is no medical cure. In fact the medical profession are unsure what causes IBS, but many experts agree it is related to increased sensitivity in the entire gut.
It is thought psychological factors can be a causal effect, intense emotional states of stress and anxiety can trigger chemical changes which interfere with the digestive system. Food poisoning is also thought to be a factor, an operation which interferes with the flow of the digestive system, a long course of antibiotics is another suspected causal effect.
However once we experience IBS symptoms which can include pain and cramping, diarrhoea or constipation or both, excessive wind, an urgency to get to the toilet, excessive mucus we tend to develop certain emotional conditions too such as increased anxiety, confidence and self-esteem drops and much more, and negative beliefs and expectations also begin to compound the physical and emotional symptoms further.
The medical profession will give you tests to exclude sinister conditions with similar symptoms, medications will be tried with varying degrees of effectiveness. IBS is as frustrating to the medical profession, as it can be debilitating for the sufferer.
The 2008 NICE guidelines quote hypnosis as a treatment for GPs to consider after 12 months of non-effective pharmacological treatment. The hypnosis based IBS Audio Program 100 has been helping IBS sufferers around the world since 1998. The program helps to change the speed of your digestive system, it calms nerves, reduces stress and IBS anxieties and much more. It is structured, easy and relaxing. After all it’s only a thought you have to change.
